We are not finding any refernce about kamatchi amman in vedic scriptures. But
the 62nd namavali in 23rd sloga if lalitha sahasranamam which is the core part
of pramanda puranam of veda vyasar gives prayer reference about kamatchi amman
. The great scholar shri Baskara Rayan (1690 - 1785) in his Bashyam ie an explanation
essay for pramanda puranam refers kamatchi amman as the “Fullfiller of well wishes”.
We are not finding any idol type of worship in vedic period. Idol worship started
only in the epic age. But now people worship kamatchi amman is idol worship in
form of statue, idoless worship in form of jyothi and in blended idol and idoless
worship in a form of peedam . basically goddess kamatchi amman is idolized in
form of homely and moderate manner. She is not depicted or idolized in a vehement
manner. So the prayers and offerings to her will be in a vegetarian type. There
will not be non vegetarian offerings ie there is no immolation. But ssome so years
back say to say till 1925 a Goat was sacrificed in a grand manner during the time
of periya samy pooja. We will see it elaborately the method of periya samy pooja
and the reasons why the immolation and periya samy pooja were stopped in the following chapters.
Ull street kamatchi amman kovil is one of the oldest kovil in virudhanagar .
it was and is a land mark in virudhanagar. The kamatchi amman peedam was installed
from pidiman by megavarnam and kootchar families. According to the statement of
megavarnam in and around 1700 AD as per the sacred voice direction of kamatchi
amman they took the pidiman from the devathana patty of madurai district kamatchi
amman kovil, lied it on the horn of a bull and migrated towards south in search
of livly hood. When they arrived virudhapatty the bull sat with the pidiman on
its horn at a place which now we call Ull street. So the migrating family installed
on small kamatchi amman peedam at that place over the pidiman and began to worship.
They settled there and started new life venture. These all happened according
to them, as per the sacred voice direction of kamatchi amman .
In the initial stage the peedam and its sanctum sanctorum was covered with that
chat roofing. We are having a south facing entrance from Ull street. The arch
entrance of the temple is east facing. The peedam and the holy sanctum is also
east facing. Till 1990 there was a open well of 30 X 25 X40 measurement at the
north east of the sanctorum. Till the provision of municipal drinking water tap
the well water supplemented the surrounding house hold water demand. In 1990 the
well was closed and a community hall was constructed over the well and on the
adjacent vacant land at the northern side of the temple. Then municipal drinking
tap connection and electric connection were provided for the temple. And a bore
well also laid at the south west side of the kovil.
There are vacant passages at eastern, southern and western side of the temple.
The eastern passage was covered with Tin shed. The western side behind the holy
sanctorum was used for cooking through country stone oven. But now at 2000AD we
are using gas stoves. And the cooking work also shifted to the terrace of the
new built hall . and flush out toilets and bath rooms were constructed at the
western side of the hall and on the western end of the terrace. And a over head
tank was also constructed. These are all the changes that took place outside the
kovil.
Inside the kovil was modified from time to time. The that chat roofing was removed
and a artistical kopuram was constructed. In front of the santorum there is a
small altar called padayal peedam and at the east of padayal peedam there is a
kalu Maram.beside this at the northern, eastern, southern and at the south we3stern
sides kavaldrivams were installed in formless peedam shapes in a side by side
arrangement namely Periya Karuppa Samy, Periya Petchi Amman, Chinna Petchi Amman,
Sankeelee Karuppa Samy, Kathavaraya Samy,Murugappa Samy, Urumi KaruppaSamy, Katari Amman Kanupunachi, Peik Karuppa Samy. Many Kaval Deivam Peedam were installed by Karuppa Nadar family clans.
At the left hand side of the sanctorum there is Bala Ganapathy stone idol with
Nagas and Mungum stone idols. In 2000AD Bala Subramanian stone idol was installed
with mayil stone idol at the right hand side. Both are facing the east flooring
were partly tiled. In 1990 and in 2000 kumbabeesham were performed. For every kovil
function separate committee was formed. That committee will make estimate, gets
sanction from the administrative committee.then they collect Thalaikattu vari
and donations from the pangalees and will conduct the kovil function .after the
function the committee will submit the function income-expenditure account to
the administrative committee.this will be checked and dcounter checked and will
get into record and the summary of a/c will be sent to each rangaler through post.
