As per megarvarnam statement :
Ulagammal was the sister of both Megavarnam and Kotchar brothers when they led
a life at Devathanapatty in Madurai district in and around 18th century i.e. some
250 years ago. When she was at her 7th year she drowned in theDevathanapatty river
during a jolly swimming. When the family members were in their bereavement a sacred
voice from their pooja room Madakuli, identified itself as Kamatchiamman, revealed
that it took birth as avatar in that family in the form a girl by the name Ulagammal
to enjoy the wordly happiness. After satisfaction she ended her life in a manner
of her own choice. That voice Kamatchi Amman added that the Megavarnam & Kotchar family should take pidiman from the Devathanapatty Kamatchi Amman Koil then should tie the same at the horn of the bull. Then they should migrate towards the southern direction of Devathanepatty with that bull and should settle at the place where bull sit with that pidiman. They should, with that podiman, install a peedam of Kamatchi Amman at the sitting place of bull, and should make it as their family god. They should pray ulagammal as their Madha by harms a separate Madha house. By this Magavarnam & Kotchar family migrated towards south accompanying the said bull with said Pidiman. After many weeks and months of traveling they came to Virudhupathy. Interestingly the bull sat at a place called now ull street.
So as per the direction of Kamatchi amman voice they installed the Kamatchi amman
peedam with the pidiman and began to worship as their family diety. Morever they
worshipped ulagamadha as their family madha by keeping the Madha box in a house.
In time course they kept the Madha box in an small thatchat roof hut at a agricultural
land in Kairumuruka thoppu, TTK Road, Virudhanagar. They had a occupational and
enjoyment right over that land. Then in 1962 that land was allotted to Megavarnam
parties through a patta during the Kamarajar regime. Then that land was partitioned
among Megavarnam Paternal Pangalees and some of the pangalees sold it out. Only
4 kulis of land was left unsold which was utilized for Madha house. Thirumathi
sampoornathammal w/o. M.P. Sundarapandiya Nadar lived there lonely till 1985.
After her death compound wall was constructed around that 4 kulis of land with
south facing main entrance. Within the wall thatchat hut was removed and a room
was constructed with east facing Kamatchi amman peedam and the Ulaga madha box
was also kept inside the room. Kanapathy & Murugan stone idols were installed
at left & right side of the room entrance respectively. At the western side
Nagam stone idols and south facing Periakaruppasamy & Sangalee Karuppasamy
stone idols were installed. Chithadai, country ornaments, Cheppu Bommai, Katholoi
were kept in the Madha pethi. During the construction of Muthuraman Patty flyover
1 ˝ kuli of land including the southern side compound wall was acquired by the
Govt. in 2000 AD. So a new compound wall was constructed at the southern side
of the remaining 2 ˝ kuli Madha koil. Since 1986 MPSN Nagendran is performing
the pooja work.
